Volunteer Placement Details

Position Title: Fundraising Advisor

Country: Laos

Location: Vientiane with occasional travel to communities in Laos

Partner Organization: HPA

Duration: 3-6 months (flexible)

Start Date: April 1st, 2026, onwards

Pre-departure Training: VWB/VSF will provide training orientation.

Eligibility: Canadian Citizens and Permanent Residents of Canada only

Language: English (essential). Volunteer will have support of translator for some duties

Academic Requirements: Degree and/or experience in Fundraising, Nonprofit Management, International Development, or a related field.

Fundraising: VWB/VSF encourages each volunteer to raise funds towards the organization’s operations.

Volunteer Support Package

• The cost of required for vaccinations and anti-malarial medication 
• Overseas emergency travel health insurance 
• A monthly living allowance (MLA) that will be paid into the volunteer’s bank account in Canada. The MLA is designed to be sufficient to cover simple housing, basic food requirements, and other typical monthly living expenses. 
• Debrief after the placement  

Placement Goals and Responsibilities

As the Fundraising Advisor based in Vientiane, Laos, you will support Health Poverty Action (HPA) to strengthen its resource mobilization capacity by developing a fundraising strategy, diversifying funding sources, and building staff skills in donor engagement. This will develop HPA’s capacity to secure more sustainable funding for its programs and community impact. 

As part of your role, you will:

•  Support the development of a comprehensive fundraising strategy tailored to HPA’s mission and programs. 
• Identify and research potential funding sources, including grants, foundations, corporate partnerships, and individual donors. 
• Build capacity of staff in proposal writing, donor reporting, donor compliance research, and grant management. 
• Provide training and mentoring in fundraising best practices, donor stewardship, and relationship building. 
• Support the development of fundraising tools and systems (e.g., donor database, proposal templates, reporting frameworks). 
• Share best practices for integrating digital fundraising and communication tools where appropriate. 
• Promote gender equality by ensuring fundraising materials and proposals highlight the role of women and marginalized groups. 
• Apply an environmental sustainability lens in proposals and fundraising activities. 
• Promote good governance and human rights practices by aligning fundraising approaches with equity and inclusivity values. 
• Participate in pre-assignment training 
• Submit reports as required by the partner organization and by VWB

Required Experience and Skills

•  Degree and/or relevant experience in Fundraising, Nonprofit Management, International Development, or a related field. 
• Demonstrated experience, ideally in a senior role, in developing fundraising strategies and securing funds from diverse sources. 
• Strong skills in grant writing, donor communications, and partnership development. 
• Experience with donor stewardship and grant management processes. 
• Familiarity with digital fundraising tools and platforms considered an asset. 
• Experience delivering training or mentoring staff in fundraising practices considered an asset. 
• Minimum two (2) years of relevant professional experience in your field of expertise. 
• A commitment to gender equality, One Health principles, and international volunteering. 
• Flexibility, adaptability, excellent interpersonal skills, and cultural sensitivity. 
• Experience living and working internationally considered an asset.
