Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

Our Commitment

At Veterinarians Without Borders North America (VWB), we are dedicated to fostering an inclusive culture that embraces diversity and promotes equity across all areas of our operations. We believe that diversity enriches our performance, strengthens the communities we serve, and connects us more closely to our mission of global animal health and welfare.

Purpose and Scope

Our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Policy outlines our commitment to creating and maintaining a diverse and inclusive environment where all individuals feel respected, are treated fairly, and can achieve their full potential. This policy applies to all employees, volunteers, partners, and the communities we serve globally.

Policy Statement

VWB is committed to ensuring that everyone, regardless of their background, has an equal opportunity to contribute to our mission. We believe that diverse perspectives and experiences enhance our work and help us better serve our global community. We aim to create an environment where everyone feels welcomed, respected, supported, and valued.

Definitions
  • Diversity: The various characteristics that make one individual or group different from another, including but not limited to race, ethnicity, gender, age, disability, sexual orientation, and cultural background.
  • Equity: Ensuring impartiality, fairness, and equal possible outcomes for every individual by addressing and removing systemic barriers.
  • Inclusion: Creating environments in which any individual or group can feel welcomed, respected, supported, and valued, fostering a sense of belonging.

Our Actions

Recruitment and Employment: We are committed to equitable recruitment practices that encourage applications from diverse communities, particularly those underrepresented in our field. Hiring, promotions, and pay will be based on merit, competence, and organizational needs.

Training and Development: We provide DEI training and development opportunities to all staff and volunteers, helping them understand biases and how to avoid them. Regular training supports career development and fosters an inclusive culture.

Accessibility and Accommodation: We make reasonable accommodations to reduce barriers for staff and volunteers with disabilities, ensuring our facilities and communications are accessible to individuals of all abilities.

Workplace Culture: We strive to create a workplace where diverse perspectives and experiences are welcomed and respected. Discrimination, harassment, or any behaviors undermining a culture of inclusivity will not be tolerated.

Feedback and Continuous Improvement: We encourage feedback on our policies and practices and commit to continuous monitoring and improvement of our DEI efforts. Regular reviews help us adapt and respond to the challenges faced by our diverse community.

Accountability

All employees and volunteers of VWB NA are expected to uphold this policy and contribute to an environment that is respectful and welcoming. Breaches of this policy will be taken seriously and may result in disciplinary action.
