Job Title: Veterinarian (DVM)

Duration: 2 months (minimum)
Start Date: As soon as possible
Pre-departure Training: VWB/VSF and Save the dogs will provide training orientation.
Eligibility Requirements: 3 years post-graduation experience and be confident in performing sterilization surgeries unassisted. Recent experience working in an animal shelter or a small animal practice and international experience.
Academic Requirements: Registered veterinarian with Provincial/Territorial veterinary association.
Fundraising: VWB/VSF encourages each volunteer to raise funds towards the organization’s operations.
Volunteer Terms & Conditions
VWB/VSF covers most of the costs of being an overseas volunteer, including:
- Return airfare to placement country
- Visa/permit costs
- The cost of required vaccinations, anti-malarial medication, and overseas emergency travel health insurance
- A monthly living allowance (MLA) that will be paid into the volunteer’s bank account in Canada. The MLA is designed to be sufficient to cover simple housing, basic food requirements, and other typical monthly living expenses.

Overall Goal
Overall Goal: Support Save the Dogs in providing normal support to organizational activities while also supporting the refugees crossing from Ukraine with their animals and animals rescued from Ukraine at the shelter.
Objectives
- Support sterilization program and the daily treatment of shelter animals as necessary
- Support rescued dogs from shelter in Ukraine
- Support refugees passing with animals
- Support refugees at Bucharest airport when appropriate
- Support Save the dogs with vaccinating refugee pets
All volunteers are expected to promote gender equality, environmental sustainability, and good governance within their placement responsibilities.
Skills
Essential
- Ability to work long, active days
- Comfortable working in primitive clinic conditions with limited resources
- Cultural sensitivity and effective cross-cultural communication skills
- Pro-active attitude
- Comfortable living in shared accommodations, possibly with hosts.
Desirable
- Previous experience working in remote situations
- Overseas veterinary experience, with VWB Canada desirable
- Knowledge of animal health challenges
About the Project: SAVE THE DOGS
Save the Dogs is an animal welfare organization that operates a veterinary clinic and animal shelter in Cernavoda, Romania. The organization was founded in 2002, with the aim to promote a culture in Romania where people recognize the importance of animal welfare in their communities, and where the inhumane killing of stray dogs stops.
Save the Dogs provides free sterilization and treatment for animals living in the streets and living as free-roaming members of their communities. The organization recently rescued 30 dogs from a war-damaged shelter in Ukraine, provides supplies and other support for refugees crossing from Ukraine to Romania, sends pet food to animal shelters in Ukraine, and provides supplies for refugees at Bucharest airport. When appropriate, dogs and cats are rehomed through an international adoption program.
About Veterinarians Without Borders
In the global south, more than 90 percent of food animals are raised by subsistence farmers. However, small-scale livestock producers, the majority of whom are women, have very limited access to quality and affordable animal health services.
Aside from the risks associated with the loss of valuable livestock that provides important protein and/or income for low-income households, zoonotic diseases that can be passed from animals to humans offer a very real threat to human health on a wider scale.
Veterinarians Without Borders/Vétérinaires sans frontières (VWB/VSF) works for and with communities in need to foster the health of animals, people, and the environments that sustain us. VWB/VSF works nationally and internationally to train animal health workers, increase food security, and improve animal and public health.
VWB/VSF provides overseas volunteer placements for veterinarians and other animal and public health professionals.
